Pivot or Detour?

Strategic Redirection or Alternative Path?

Occasionally, it becomes necessary to make significant changes when circumstances are unfavorable. However, there are times when only a minor adjustment is required. I can attest to this, having experienced both scenarios extensively.

In 2003, I was laid off after 22 years at a software company, where I held positions in middle and senior management. I began my career on the service desk and eventually became the VP of Research and Development, overseeing the highest revenue product line. Later, I managed a division of service personnel and consultants who assisted clients with installation, customization, and training on the company's products.

I share this information because I understand, from personal experience, the challenges that many dedicated public servants are currently facing with regard to job insecurity and loss. I also acknowledge that my own experiences and recovery may not apply to everyone.

Many people doubted my decision then, and some still do. Instead of returning to the daily grind, I decided to pivot my career. I applied to and was accepted by Brite Divinity School in Fort Worth, Texas, with the support of my church and conference, to pursue a path into ministry. Although at the time, I was uncertain about how that ministry would unfold.

I'll stop here, as my experiences may not align with your goals or resources. I've made plenty of mistakes along the way.

This decision represented a significant career pivot—a complete turnaround from my previous occupation—and necessitated that I restart both my life and professional trajectory. It demanded considerable faith, discernment, resilience, and humility to transition from a senior position to starting anew at the entry level. Additionally, it required obtaining a master's degree.

Since then, I have taken various detours for survival. Selling cars wasn't my plan, but I did it for two years until the job I was waiting for came along. Though retired, I prefer staying active and engaged rather than sitting on the couch all day.

To maintain mental engagement, I pursued certification as a professional coach. This enables me to work with clients who may encounter similar challenges to those I have experienced. In the intervals between coaching sessions, I have dedicated time to my long-standing hobby of jewelry making, which I have practiced for over two decades. Recently, I have created an excess of jewelry beyond what I can personally utilize or gift. Consequently, I have decided to launch an online store. You may access the new store using the following link:

Beyond the Rainbow Jewelry

For individuals who celebrate Pride throughout the year, I am pleased to inform you that my store offers a wide range of rainbow-themed items. Additionally, I am continuing my coaching activities; this is merely a detour.
